The 3AM Conundrum

I often wake up in the middle of the night. Sometimes it’s because of a dream, while other times some health issue forces me awake. On occasion I will just find myself staring into the dark for no real reason at all, unable to fall back to sleep.

Being wide awake in the middle of the night can be a tricky thing to deal with.

I usually have a wealth of ideas for things to write at such times. I know some people keep journals beside the bed for that very situation. I never found myself a fan of that solution, as writing by hand is cumbersome to me. My brain tends to be five sentences ahead when I’m using pen and paper, so I lose thoughts during the transposition. Plus writing by hand requires some light source. That tends to be unwelcome at 3AM when you share a bed with a spouse.

So I inevitably have to decide whether to get out of bed and go write, or stay put hoping to fall back to sleep. Usually the hope for sleep wins out. Sometimes I wonder how many ideas have floated away because I just don’t get them written down in those moments of inspiration.

How about you? Do you find yourself awake when you’d rather be resting, head full of ideas? How do you handle it?
